Brazilian Mano Menezes takes charge of Al Nassr

Riyadh: Saudi Pro League side Al Nassr have appointed Brazilian Mano Menezes as head coach, replacing Croatian Alen Horvat.

The decision came just hours after Al Nassr’s 3-2 defeat to Dhamk in Round 25 of the Saudi Pro League on Friday, the club’s ninth defeat of the season.

Former Brazil national team head coach Menezes takes charge of Al Nassr just days before they begin their 2021 AFC Champions League campaign.

The 58-year-old Menezes is vastly experienced, having also previously coached Brazilian clubs Flamengo, Corinthians, Cruzeiro and Palmeiras.

Menezes also coached China’s Shandong Luneng, steering them to the quarter-finals of the 2016 AFC Champions League before deciding to leave the club for personal reasons.

Al Nassr are in Group D of the 2021 AFC Champions League and open their campaign against Jordan’s Al Wehdat on Wednesday.

Qatar’s Al Sadd and the winners of Saturday’s playoff between Islamic Republic of Iran’s Foolad Khouzestan and Al Ain of the United Arab Emirates complete the group.
