Al Taawoun-ACL2020

Buraidah: Al Taawoun FC head coach Vitor Campelos said teamwork was the key ingredient in his side’s 2-0 win against Al Duhail SC in Group C of the AFC Champions League 2020 on Tuesday.

Goals from Mohammed Al Sahlawi and Abdulmajeed Al Swat at the King Abdullah Sport City Stadium steered the AFC Champions League newcomers to their second consecutive victory.

Portuguese Campelos said he was proud that the team's heavy schedule did not have an impact on their performance against Qatar giants Al Duhail.

“I’m really happy with the result and proud of the performance of the players,” said the 44-year-old coach.

“We prepared well for this important game. The match was not easy because we had to travel a lot recently and we tried our best to work on the psychological side with the players.”

Al Duhail SC head coach Walid Regragui blamed lapses in concentration for the defeat.

“We performed well in the first half and we had some chances,” said the Moroccan. “Al Taawoun played defensively but they still took the lead in the first half.

“Things changed in the second period as Al Taawoun attacked more and we couldn't find a way back into the game."

Despite the defeat, Regragui said that there is still a chance for his side to advance to the knockout stage.

“The defeat doesn’t mean that we have no chance as we are still at the start of the competition,” he said. “We must concentrate more in order to win our remaining matches."

Al Duhail, having defeated Islamic Republic of Iran's Persepolis FC in their opening match, are second in the standings and face UAE's Sharjah FC on March 2. Al Taawoun will play Persepolis on the same day.
