Guangzhou Evergrande prepared for Suwon Samsung Bluewings AFC Champions League clash

Doha: Guangzhou Evergrande head coach Fabio Cannavaro believes his side have what it takes to go all the way in the 2020 AFC Champions League, ahead of their Group G opener against Suwon Samsung Bluewings.

The two time AFC Champions League winners have not played any of their games in the group yet with the COVID-19 outbreak postponing their fixtures from February onwards, but the condensed schedule seems a little easier now with Malaysian side Johor Darul Ta’zim having withdrawn earlier.

“After the end of the Chinese Super League season, we are here to prepare and fight,” said Cannavaro.

“We do not have Paulinho who is out injured and has returned to Brazil, but we have faith in the rest of the squad. Our goal of course is to do our best and try to go forward and win the competition.

“We know that we have a good opportunity to do something very nice here. We have young players and I want to go far with them. There are many good teams here but we are one of the best teams in Asia and won the AFC Champions League twice in the past 10 years.”

Cannavaro’s counterpart Park Kun-ha’s side on the other hand had lost their opener back in February against Japan’s Vissel Kobe, and a win on Sunday would put them firmly back on track before the three-way battle for two qualification spots reaches its conclusion on the December 4.

“Although we are facing difficult times due to COVID-19, it is our pleasure to play in the 2020 AFC Champions League," said Park.

“I believe the first match against Guangzhou Evergrande is very important. We know the opponents are very strong, but together with the players we are prepared to fight for victory. This match is very important and depending on the result everything can change, so we are preparing accordingly."

The two-time Asian Club Championship winners will have until December for their second match in Doha, while Guangzhou Evergrande and Vissel Kobe lock horns in a double header in the space of three days.

“Of course, we can think getting eight days of rest after the first game is a good thing, but more important than worrying about the second game is the result we get tomorrow. According to that, those eight days will go."
