Guangzhou Evergrande's performance frustrates Cannavaro in AFC Champions League draw with Suwon Samsung Bluewings

Doha: Guangzhou Evergrande head coach Fabio Cannavaro conceded that his side lacked in many areas as they settled for a 1-1 draw against Suwon Samsung Bluewings in Group G of the 2020 AFC Champions League on Tuesday.

After a quiet first half, Suwon Samsung finally got off the mark in the competition through Lim Sang-heyob’s tap-in on the rebound from Lee Ki-je’s free-kick. Wei Shihao equalised for Guangzhou Evergrande in the 72nd minute, but they were reduced to 10 men just two minutes later as Zhon Yihao was dismissed for a second bookable offence.

The draw meant Suwon Samsung Bluewings need to beat runaway group leaders Vissel Kobe with two goals if they are to snatch the second place in the group, currently occupied by Guangzhou Evergrande who have already completed their group stage fixtures.

“I am not happy because the performance of my team in the first half was not so good,” said Cannavaro.

“We did not control the game and we did not try to play football. Even in defence, we did not play so well. In the second half after going behind we started to play as Guangzhou Evergrande should and this is not the first time we did this. I don’t want to find excuses."

"When going 1-0 down we started to play well, after it became 1-1 we started to control the game but then after the red card we were in trouble.

“You become a little bit nervous when you are a goal behind, but it means you care, we are a young team, so we have to be mentally stronger because this is not the first time we find ourselves in this situation.”

Holding the numerical advantage for the last quarter of an hour, Suwon Samsung Bluewings pushed men forward, but to the dismay of coach Park Kun-ha, they were unable to take their chances, leaving themselves in need of a two-goal winning margin against Vissel Kobe on Friday.

“Unlike previous matches, we were able to score a goal today, but we also missed many chances that we could not capitalise on,” said Park.

“After the red card, we had an advantage and we attacked more and created chances and it was unfortunate that we could not score. The players gave their all and for that I am thankful to them, but we must score more goals next time, so we will prepare the players to be more aggressive and focused in front of goal.

“[Vissel] Kobe guaranteed their place in the Round of 16 but we don’t know how they will play against us, but the most important thing is to focus on our game and be aggressive to score two goals.”
