Matchday One - Group H: Sydney FC 0-2 Suwon Samsung Bluewings

Wednesday, February 14, 2018

Sydney: A brace from Dejan Damjanovic helped Suwon Samsung Bluewings to a comfortable 2-0 win over Sydney FC in their opening Group H encounter of the 2018 AFC Champions League on Wednesday.

The visitors started the brighter of the two teams and Damjanovic had an early chance to give Seo Jung-won’s side the lead, but couldn’t keep the ball down as he attempted to chip Andrew Redmayne in goal.

While he missed that chance, he made no mistake midway through the second half when he was afforded too much space on the edge of the box, firing his shot low and hard past the outstretched hand of Redmayne.

The former FC Seoul player, the second highest scorer in AFC Champions League history, made it 2-0 shortly after when Brandon O’Neill was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box, with the Montenegrin international making no mistake from the spot to seal the points for the visitors.

It was a disappointing night for the home side, who struggled to muster any meaningful attacks and must now regroup in time for the trip to Shanghai next week to face Chinese FA Cup winners Shanghai Shenhua.

Suwon Samsung Bluewings, meanwhile, will return to Korea Republic to face Kashima Antlers next Wednesday.
