Micale lauds Al Hilal players after AFC Champions League rebound against AGMK

Riyadh: Head coach Rogério Micale praised the response of his Al Hilal SFC players after the Saudi Pro League side cruised to 3-0 win over Uzbekistan’s AGMK FC in Group A of the 2021 AFC Champions League on Tuesday.

Al Hilal showed no signs of carrying the effects of the 4-1 Machday Four defeat to FC Istiklol as goals from Luciano Vietto, Bafetimbi Gomis and Yasir Al Shahrani sealed victory against AGMK at the Prince Faisal bin Fahd Stadium.

The three points took Al Hilal to 10 points, level with FC Istiklol with the Tajikistan side topping the table on a better head-to-head with the Saudi side.

Micale said the performance of his players was impressive as they recovered quickly from the Istiklol defeat.

“I want to congratulate the players for the big match they had,” said the Brazilian. “They had an impressive and strong performance tonight.”

“Their reaction was excellent after the previous defeat. The players showed from the first match and until tonight that they were responsible and they have given their best in every match.

“I trust all the players in our team list as any player can play at any time. We made some changes in the match and the new players gave their best, as expected.”

Al Hilal end their group stage campaign against already eliminated Shabab Al Ahli Dubai while Istiklol play AGMK.

Only the group winners are assured of a place in the Round of 16 but if both Al Hilal and Istiklol reach 13 points, whoever finishes second has a bright chance of advancing as one of the three best group runners-up.

AGMK head coach Mirdjalal Kasimov said his players lost focus after the first Al Hilal goal.

“We didn’t perform well as we were good in the first 40 minutes only,” said Kasimov. “After conceding the first goal, we lost concentration and the players suffered mentally.”

“We went into this competition with great pleasure because we are playing at the top club competition in the continent. We believe this was a great chance for us to play against the best and get to know new styles of play."
