Perreira adapting to AFC Champions League schedule as Shanghai SIPG overcome Yokohama F. Marinos

Doha: Shanghai SIPG head coach Vitor Perreira remained pragmatic as his side collected the three points in a 2-1 win over Yokohama F. Marinos despite a gruelling schedule that has seen them play four 2020 AFC Champions League games in nine days.

SIPG took the lead in the Group H tie through Cai Huikang’s powerful header early on before Ado Onaiwo struck the equaliser a few minutes later. Ricardo Lopes had the final say though, putting the Chinese Super League side ahead midway through the second half after combining with Oscar who sent the former in on goal.

“I am very happy with the team and players because they showed good spirit and played with organisation,” said Perreira.

“We are trying to come with solutions to face the current schedule. This is not the way we would play if we were playing once a week."

Group H - MD4: Yokohama F. Marinos 1-2 Shanghai SIPG FC

"We are the only team playing every three days in this group, so we are accumulating fatigue against teams who have played less than us in every game, so we have to find solutions to tackle this situation.

“I would like to press higher in every game, but I cannot always do that because we are not machines, the players are human beings, and I cannot ask them something beyond their ability.”

Needing only to avoid defeat in their next game to ensure progression to the Round of 16, Yokohama F. Marinos head coach Ange Postecoglou was adamant that every upcoming match is important.

“It is disappointing to lose but we played very well so I am not too upset,” said Postecoglou.

“Sometimes in football you play well but do not win, but I am proud of the players today. I thought we were even a little bit better than the first game. We dominated more this time and created more chances. It is not an easy surface to play football.

“It is a difficult schedule so of course we will make some changes as we did today, we want to play our football in every game. We did that today and we will try to do it against Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, Sydney FC and in every game of the tournament as long as we are here.”
