Pereira, Morais to pause friendship as Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors and Shanghai SIPG clash in AFC Champions League

Doha: Shanghai SIPG head coach Vitor Pereira wants to put his friendship with fellow Portuguese Jose Morais, his Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors counterpart on hold for 90 minutes as the two sides clash in Group G of the 2020 AFC Champions League on Sunday.

The two tacticians are long-time friends, having both worked at FC Porto around the turn of the century.

They have since both gone on to win league titles in Asia, with Perreira guiding Shanghai SIPG to their first-ever Chinese Super League title and Morais lifting back-to-back K League 1 titles with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors.

“We have known each other for a long time,” said Perreira.

“Tomorrow is a game we both want to win, so for 90 minutes there will be no friendship, but at the end of the game we will be friends again.

"In Portugal we do well in preparing coaches and we have a tradition of adapting well to other cultures and being flexible, that combination is why many of us Portuguese coaches do well abroad."

“It is very difficult to recover so quickly after our last match, so we will have to look at players who didn’t play the full 90 minutes against Sydney FC.

"Oscar starts training with the team today, we will assess his fitness and whether he can help us. We have to wait for training today.”

While Shanghai SIPG could go level with Yokohama F. Marinos at the top of the group with a win on Sunday, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors could find themselves well off the pace midway through their group stage campaign if they fail to get their first win of the 2020 AFC Champions League at Khalifa International Stadium.

“We are well prepared and excited for our first game here,” said Morais.

“We are focusing on what is possible for us and our possibilities exist in terms of qualifying and reaching the final."

"The competition is difficult, and we want to perform to tell the world that even in a moment of big challenge, human will and creativity can overcome adversity.

“My mindset is about focusing on the possibilities of the moment, not what we did in the past. My only thought is about winning the game.”
