Preliminary Stage 1: Chennai City FC (IND) 0-1 Riffa SC (BHR)

Ahmedabad: Mahdi Abduljabbar's first half goal earned Riffa SC of Bahrain a narrow 1-0 win over India's Chennai City FC in their 2020 AFC Champions League Preliminary Stage 1 tie at the Arena Stadium on Tuesday.

Abduljabbar's goal four minutes from the break separated the sides as Riffa held on to their slim advantage to progress into the Preliminary Stage Two.

Both sides were evenly matched for the most part of the first half but it was Riffa who found the net in the 41st minute when midfielder Habeeb Haroun fed Abduljabbar, who made his way into the penalty box before losing his marker and curling his effort past Chennai City shot-stopper Nauzet Santana.

The teams produced a subdued performance in the second half as Riffa held on for the win.

Riffa will next face Shahr Khodro FC of Islamic Republic of Iran in the Preliminary Stage Two on January 21.

The winners of the Preliminary Stage Two tie will advance to the Play-off round against Qatar's Al Sailiya SC on January 28.

The winners of the Play-off will advance to Group B alongside Al Hilal SFC of Saudi Arabia, the UAE's Shabab Al Ahli Dubai and Pakhtakor of Uzbekistan.
