Preview - Round of 16 2nd Leg: Shandong Luneng FC (1) v (2) Guangzhou Evergrande FC

Jinan: Two-time winners Guangzhou Evergrande journey to Shandong Luneng on Tuesday looking to make it to the quarter-finals for the sixth time in their history – a record for a Chinese team.

A first half strike from Wei Shihao and an own goal from Shandong defender Zheng Zheng sees Fabio Cannavaro's Guangzhou with a slim advantage ahead of the tie at Jinan Olympic Sports Center.

However, Zhang Chi's reply for Shandong does keep theings tantalisingly poised with the Jinan side returning to eastern China with an away goal from last week's visit to Tianhe Stadium.

Despite twice reaching the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League, Shandong have still never managed a single victory in the knockout stages, drawing four and losing three of their seven games at this stage to date.

Their most recent was an away goals victory over Australia's Sydney FC in 2016 after a 1-1 draw in Jinan was followed by a 2-2 draw at Sydney Football Stadium.

The hosts do enter Tuesday's game in poor form, however, having not won in all competitions since May 29, a run of four matches without a victory, while Guangzhou, by contrast, are on a splendid run having won their last eight consecutive matches.

In the weekend's Chinese Super League ties, Guangzhou maintained their chase of table toppers Beijing FC with a 2-1 win at home to Hebei FC, while Shandong were defeated 2-1 away at Tianjin Teda.
