Ceres' Marañón wins Top Scorer Award

Kuala Lumpur: While Al Ahed emerged atop the 2019 AFC Cup mountain, one of the competition’s major individual honours went to Ceres-Negros forward Bienvenido Marañón who won the Top Scorer Award.

The 33-year-old Spaniard scored 10 goals in just eight matches, with his Continent-beating haul coming despite his side’s exit at the Zonal semi-final stage.

Marañón won the title ahead of 4.25 SC’s Kim Yu-song and Hanoi FC’s Ganiyu Bolaji Oseni, both of whom found the back of the net on nine occasions.

Formerly on the books of several Spanish clubs including Cádiz, Marañón has been a welcome addition to the Ceres-Negros front line since joining the club in 2015, and he starred throughout their 2019 campaign with his 10-goal return, including hat-tricks against both Shan United and Becamex Binh Duong.

Marañón revealed his joy at finishing as the competition’s most prolific marksman.

“I'm very pleased to be named Top Scorer of the 2019 AFC Cup,” he said.

“It's the icing on the cake on what has been a great year for me personally. I have worked very hard since pre-season and throughout the campaign to lift my level even higher than the previous year, and everything has turned out very well.

“Being able to achieve the accolade of Top Scorer really fills me with joy as it's something I've aimed to reach for three tournaments now, so it's another motivational achievement for me to keep improving.

“It will push me to work even harder and better next season.”
