Tavares takes charge of Persija Jakarta
Jakarta: Persija Jakarta have announced the appointment of highly experienced Brazilian Edson Tavares as their new head coach.
Tavares, a two-time Vietnam national team head coach, has also managed several top clubsides in Asia previously with Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal FC, China PR’s Chongqing Lifan and Sepahan of the Islamic Republic of Iran among them.
Tavares, 63, handled Vietnam in 1995 and 2004 and was also head coach of the Jordan and Haiti national teams.

“I am very happy to join Persija. I hope to bring Persija out of this difficult situation. I want to win a lot here,” said Tavares, the club's third head coach of the 2019 season after Ivan Kolev and Julio Banuelos.
Defending Liga One champions Persija are having a torrid season, with the Jakarta-based club sitting 14th in the 18-team league and 28 points behind leaders Bali United.
Their last league match ended in a 1-0 defeat to Borneo FC and they will next play Persela Lamongan on Wednesday.
Their 2019 AFC Cup campaign also ended in the group stage.
