Yangon: Becamex Binh Duong coach Tranh Minh Chien's recent resignation comes as a blow to the Vietnamese side ahead of Wednesday's Group G tie against Shan United in Yangon.

Having picked up just a point from the opening two matches of the 2019 AFC Cup, Becamex Binh Duong's Continental campaign is set to get even tougher as they prepare for Myanmar's Shan United without a win and now without their coach following Tranh Minh Chien's abrupt departure on Saturday.

"I thought about my decision for a long time before deciding to leave Becamex Binh Duong," said Minh Chien, a former national team striker who led the side to 2018 National Cup glory.

"We had a successful season last year. That success was created by the whole team, as a family together and with all our minds towards one goal."

"However, this year, I feel this hasn't been the case and so I have decided to take my leave.

"I am resigning to avoid any further impact on the team or to the reputation of the club."

Many of the Becamex Binh Duong players took to social media to express their gratitude to the outgoing coach, who had clearly made a big impact on the team despite just one year in charge.

In his place, assistant coach Nguyen Thanh Son will lead Becamex Binh Duong against Shan United.

Having seen the side share a goalless draw in their AFC Cup opener with Persija Jakarta before a disappointing 3-1 defeat at home to Ceres Negros, the V.League club will be looking to end their slump against the group's bottom side.

Regardless of the result on Wednesday, however, Minh Chien's replacement himself believes his promotion may well be temporary.

"I was appointed to this position by the club, but I am willing to step back into the assistant role should a new coach be selected by the team," said Thanh Son.
