Yangon: A pair of late goals proved decisive as Kaya FC-Iloilo of the Philippines defeated Myanmar’s Shan United 2-0 in their opening 2020 AFC Cup Group H match at the Thuwunna Stadium on Wednesday.

Jovan Bedic’s successful penalty kick broke the deadlock after 74 minutes, before Eric Giganto sealed the win with five minutes remaining as the visitors began their campaign in style.

Shan United arrived hopeful of a strong start to their campaign, but almost fell behind within four minutes, with goalkeeping heroics required from Thiha Sithu to keep them level as the captained saved Takumi Uesato’s follow-up after Dsvid Htan had nearly turned the ball into his own net.

The hosts recovered from that scare, and gradually found a greater sense of control, keeping almost twice as much possession as their opponents and going close to opening the scoring through Yakubu Abubakar’s long range effort 10 minutes before half-time.

Abubakar hit the post shortly after the break, with Nanda Kyaw blasting his follow-up effort wide, before Bedic missed a terrific opportunity at the other end of the pitch just seconds later as each side edged towards a breakthrough goal.

The match changed course with just over a quarter of an hour remaining, when Shan United’s Djedje Maximin Djawa brought substitute Arnel Amita down into the penalty area, before Bedic eased the ball into the back of the net from the subsequent spot-kick.

It was another substitute, Eric Giganto, who confirmed Kaya FC-Iloilo’s win, sending a terrific low effort beyond Sithu from 18 yards after being cleverly supplied by Bedic.

Kayo FC-Iloilo will return to home comforts for their Matchday Two clash with Tampines Rovers on February 26, while Shan United will be on the road against PSM Makassar on the same day.
