Group H: PSM Makassar 1-1 Kaya FC-Iloilo

Tuesday, April 2, 2019

Cibinong: A stoppage time goal from Marwin Angeles earned Kaya FC-Iloilo a valuable point away from home after a 1-1 draw with Indonesia’s PSM Makassar in their 2019 AFC Cup Group H tie on Tuesday.

With both sides undefeated heading into the Group H encounter, and with only the top of the pool guaranteed progression to the next round, both teams knew winning all three points was crucial to their Continental ambitions.

In a cagey opening to the game, it was the visitors who had the first chance of the game when Jordan Mintah was played in behind the PSM Makassar defence, but his attempt the curl the ball past Rivki Mokodompit was thwarted by the custodian.

Outside of two attempts from Darryl Roberts - both of which went wide - the rest of the opening half belonged to the home side, with captain Wiljan Pluim central to a lot of their play, taking shots and creating chances for others.

Darije Kalezic’s side should’ve taken the lead five minutes into the second half when Pluim again created a glorious opportunity, sliding the ball in behind the Kaya defence for Rizky Pellu, but the midfielder inexplicably put his shot wide with just the keeper to beat.

The Indonesians thought they’d taken the lead just four minutes later when defender Aaron Evans turned the ball in from a corner, but the offside flag cut short the celebrations.

It mattered little though as in the very next play Eero Markkanen was fouled by Camelo Tacusalme with the referee adjudging that the foul occurred in the penalty area and awarding a penalty to the home side.

Having won the spot-kick, the Finnish striker stepped forward to put the ball in the back of the net to give his side a deserved lead.

Kaya thought they had drawn level on 69 minutes when Connor Tacagni headed home, but the offside flag that had come to their rescue earlier in the half this time denied their equaliser.

With 10 minutes to go, Rivki produced a heroic save to keep his side’s slender lead, as Yannick Tuason’s header took a deflection off Abdul Rahman and looked like looping in at the back post before the custodian rose to swat the ball away.

With time almost elapsed, the home side conceded a free-kick in a central position, with the ball floated over the top of a static PSM Makassar defence, finding Angeles free in the box with time to control the ball on his chest and volley home past a helpless Rivki.

The two sides meet again in a fortnight in the Philippines in what will be a crucial match in determining which team advances from Group H.
