Kuwait SC-AFC Cup 2020

Kuwait City: Kuwait SC may have opened their 2020 AFC Cup campaign with a win but head coach Waleed Nassar said his side must improve if they are to enjoy an extended run in the competition.

Abdullah Al Buraiki’s free-kick secured a 1-0 win against Lebanon’s Al Ansar in their Group B opener on Monday but Nassar said he wasn’t completely satisfied with the performance of the three-time champions.

“We managed to get the three points which is the most important thing for us,” said Nassar. “The victory will give us a push before our next matches in the competition.

“There was a lot of pressure on us in the matches that we played recently but the good thing is that we are winning.

“The performance of the team, however, is not consistent and we must improve on this.”

Group B - MD1: Kuwait SC 1-0 Al Ansar FC

Unlike Nassar, Al Ansar FC head coach Abdulwahab Abo Alhayl was a happy man despite the defeat as he believes the 13-time Lebanon champions performed well.

“We had a good performance despite the fact that we are lacking match fitness,” said Abo Alhayl. “We were affected by the lack of competitive football as the league back home hasn’t kicked off yet."

“We prepared for the match with a camp in Qatar, which helped us perform against Kuwait SC,” explained the Iraqi coach. “We controlled the match but we failed to convert the chances that we had.

“Regardless the defeat, the good performance motivate us to improve for the next match which we will be playing at home.”

Al Ansar play Jordan’s Al Faisaly next on February 24 while Kuwait SC will take on Syria’s Al Wathba on the same day. Al Faisaly and Al Wathba played to a 0-0 draw on Monday.
