Manama: Bahrain’s Manama and Syria’s Al Jaish played out a goalless draw in their 2018 AFC Cup Group B opener on Monday.
The Syrian side had the best chance early on when midfielder Moumen Naji’s left-footed effort from the edge of the area sailed above the crossbar following a poor defensive clearance by the Bahrainis.
Manama responded with a Saad Al Amer header that grazed the top of the bar and went behind for a goal kick in the 24th minute.
After the break, Al Amer had Manama’s most dangerous shot, receiving Erick Luis’ pass inside the box and attempting a powerful finish from a tight angle, only to see his shot go wide at the hour mark.
Al Jaish’s most dangerous threat of the second period came in the dying minutes when substitute Hasan Al Owied was released free on the Bahraini goalkeeper but decided to square rather than attempt a shot, and saw his pass go behind teammate Mohamad Kalaji as the final whistle announced a stalemate in Manama.
