Maziya’s Sekulovski looking forward to Abahani tie

Dhaka: Maziya Sports & Recreation head coach Marjan Sekulovski and his charges are feeling confident ahead of their 2020 AFC Cup Preliminary Stage 2 first leg tie against Bangladesh’s Abahani Limited Dhaka.

Since their debut in 2013, Maziya never failed to make an appearance in the AFC Cup till 2017, and after a two-year absence, Sekuovski’s side is eager to begin their bid to return to the group stage.

The Male-based club, who finished second in the Dhivehi Premier League last season, will face familiar foes in Abahani, having played them in the 2017 group stage, where Maziya won both matches and Sekulovski is hoping his side can repeat their success.

“It is good to be optimistic (against Abahani) but every year has different conditions and different players,” said Sekulovski.

“However, we are hoping to repeat the kind of results we produced against them in 2017.

“Every game is different, so I don’t think we have an advantage on the basis of previous record. The important thing is that our players will give their best performance and win the game.”

The former Shan United head coach, however, will caution his team against taking their Bangladeshi rivals lightly.

“We watched Abahani’s matches in the Federation Cup; they are a good side and it is not important which department of theirs is strong. The most important thing is the result and the pitch we are going to play on.

“The target is to get a good result [in the away match] and then in the home match and advance to the second round of the pre-qualification stage.”
