Perfect match took Kuwait SC into AFC Cup knockout stage, says Juarez

Amman: Head coach Carlos Juarez hailed Kuwait SC's "perfect performance" as the three-time winners advanced to the 2021 AFC Cup West Zonal semi-finals after a 1-0 win over Jordan’s Al Faisaly on Thursday.

Kuwait SC secured their place in the West Zonal semi-finals as Group C winners, thanks to Tunisian forward Ahmed Akaichi's 47th minute effort.

The result meant that Kuwait SC topped the group with seven points, one Al Faisaly. They will play Jordan's Al Salt in the West Zonal last four stage while Bahrain's Muharraq Club will face 2019 champions Al Ahed of Lebanon.

“We were facing the most difficult match of the tournament and I want to thank the players who did a great job and played a perfect match,” said Juarez. “We dominated the match and played well defensively to finish with the result that we wanted.

“We want to continue our progress in the competition as we have great history in the AFC Cup. Our aim is to go as far as possible and fight for the title this year."

Al Faisaly head coach Hussam Al Saed was left to rue the numerous missed chances which ultimately cost his team dearly.

“We could have gotten a better result today,” said a disappointed Al Saed. “We had a slow start in the first 15 minutes and afterwards, we missed several chances. Things would have been different had we scored."

“Our opponents were waiting for us to make mistakes. After conceding the goal, we made some changes to improve the midfield but the players failed to take advantage of the opportunities they created.

“The goal we conceded was down to a defensive error. We warned the players against underestimating the opponents and think only of the three points. We made many mistakes today and in football, you can’t win if you have plenty of them.”
