Play-off - 2nd Leg: Yangon United FC 3-1 Indera SC

Yangon: Yangon United FC of Myanmar eased into the 2020 AFC Cup Group Stage with a 9-2 aggregate win over Brunei Darussalam’s Indera SC after securing a 3-1 second leg triumph in the play-off on Wednesday.

In possession of a handsome lead following last week’s first leg in Bandar Seri Begawan, Tin Maung Tun’s side never looked in any danger despite being level at 1-1 at half-time, before extending their aggregate lead with second half goals to Emmanuel Ikechukwu and Than Paing.

Yangon United will now join Ho Chi Minh City FC, Lao Toyota FC and Hougang United FC in Group F, which begins on February 11.

The hosts began the tie at the Thuwunna Stadium confident of another goalfest, and Indera’s early fears were realised when Kaung Htet Soe opened the scoring for Yangon after just 13 minutes, with the forward following up to force the ball home after Ernest Barfo’s initial effort hit the crossbar.

Now faced with a six-goal mountain to climb, Indera continued to work hard, and they were rewarded with a goal of their own eight minutes before half-time, when Rodrigo Tosi converted a penalty kick after Marcelo De Souza had been hauled down by Thein Than Win.

De Souza nearly put the visitors in front shortly after, but his off-target shot denied him a goal of the season contender after a stunning piece of skill had put him through on goal a minute before half-time.

While Indera were more competitive than in the first leg, Yangon still powered ahead after the break, restoring their six-goal buffer when Ikechukwu slid the ball under goalkeeper Mohd Ahsanuddin in the 63rd minute, before the hosts produced arguably the move of the match to seal the tie 15 minutes later, with Than Paing putting the finishing touches to a sumptuous counter-attack.

Yangon looked to have taken their aggregate tally into double figures when substitute Zin Min Tun curled one in stoppage time, only for the goal to be chalked off for offside, leaving Yangon with a 9-2 win over two legs.
