Singapore: Abdil Qaiyyim, the match winner for Home United in their 2019 AFC Cup Group H encounter with Lao Toyota, spoke of his delight after his header on the stroke of half time sealed their first win of this year’s campaign.
Having made the ASEAN Zonal Final for the last two years, the Protectors were confident of another good showing in the AFC Cup, but without a win after their first two games they were desperate to get back on the winners’ list to get their campaign back on track.
They were made to work hard for their 1-0 win, but Qaiyyim’s header in first half stoppage time was enough to seal all three points.

“It means a lot to us as a team,” said Abdil.
“It’s going to boost us because this is our second win in a row (in all competitions) and in both games we conceded zero goals at the back.
“So it’s going to be a good morale booster for the team, we’re going to keep pushing. We’re going to do much, much better than this.”
While it was his goal that separated the teams, the 29-year-old was quick to heap praise on the entire team for working through their form slump that saw them go five matches without a win in all competitions.
“It’s a whole team effort,” he added.
“For the past few weeks the boys have been putting in a lot of hard work and I think it’s about time that we turn the corner. We hope that we can carry on from this.”
It was another tough night at the office for Lao Toyota, whose winless streak in the AFC Cup now stretches to 12 games, with their last win coming back in 2016.
Speaking after the game, midfielder Victor Amaro said the side were disappointed they didn’t at least take a point from the encounter, but could take heart from their second half performance.
“I think in the first half, the first 15-20 minutes were difficult, we tried to play too many long passes,” the Brazilian said.
“But I think in the second half we tried to play, we tried to score, we could maybe have got a draw because the game was open.
“We are disappointed because we are trying to get enough points to go to the next round.”
