Asia’s futsal elite set to discover Turkmenistan 2020 path

Ashgabat: Asia’s top 16 national futsal teams are set to discover their path to Continental glory, when the official draw for AFC Futsal Championship Turkmenistan 2020 is staged at Ashgabat’s Olympia Hotel on Friday.

A total of 52 qualifying matches in October have produced a high-quality group of finalists, including the competition’s two previous winners Islamic Republic of Iran and Japan.

The 16 qualified teams will be split into four groups of four, with the top two in each group to advance to the knockout stage of competition.

Hosts Turkmenistan will be joined by 12-time champions Iran, three-time winners Japan and four-time runners-up Uzbekistan in Pot 1, with Lebanon, Vietnam, Bahrain and 2019 AFF Futsal Championship winners Thailand in Pot 2.

The draw also marks a major milestone in Oman’s futsal history, with the nation to appear alongside Asia’s heavyweights in the Continental Finals for the first time.

The 2020 edition - the 16th staging of the AFC Futsal Championship, and third since 2010 to have been hosted in Central Asia – will be held from February 26 to March 8 2020.

The competition also serves as the final Asian qualifying stage for the 2020 FIFA Futsal World Cup, with the top five teams at Turkmenistan 2020 to represent the continent at next year’s Global Finals in Lithuania,

The AFC Futsal Championship Turkmenistan 2020 official draw will commence at 15:00 local time.
