Malaysia beat Vietnam, Thailand dethrone Indonesia

Malaysia v Vietnam - AFF U-15 Championship 2019

Chonburi: Malaysia and Thailand will face off in the 2019 AFF U-15 Championship 2019 after beating Vietnam and defending champions Indonesia in their respective semi-final ties on Wednesday. 

The final between Malaysia and Thailand on Friday will be a meeting of familiar foes, having just met in the group stage on Monday, with the tie ending in a 1-1 draw.

Indonesia and Vietnam will play in the third place play-off.

Both sides were eager to get going and Malaysia had their first chance in the third minute when they were awarded a free-kick. Mohamad Khairil Mohd Zain had a crack but his shot sailed over the bar.

A few minutes later, Vietnam were celebrating as striker Pham Van Phong, waiting just to the left of the box, picked up a pass and raced towards goal. He cut left, and then right, to evade his marker, and slammed into the top corner.

The Malaysians piled on the pressure and midfielder Muhammad Adam Uwais Mohd Armi set-up Muhammad Aliff Izwan Yuslan at the top of the box who in turn spotted Muhammad Nabil Qayyum Zainuddin on the right. Nabil sent a low shot which 'keeper Nguyen Quang Truong stopped but it trickled over into goal.

Soon after the break, Malaysia were celebrating again as three minutes in, Muhammad Adam relayed the ball to Nabil, who waltzed his way through a string of defenders and tapped the ball home.

Victory for Malaysia was sealed with three minutes on the clock, Muhammad Izrin Ibrahim sneaked in a short pass to Aliff who slipped past two defenders and blasted home.

Indonesia 0-2 Thailand

The first serious attempt came in the 16th minute as Anucha Somonwat rushed in and first timed a cross from Niphitphon Wongpanya but the effort was saved by goalkeeper I Made Putra Kaicen. A few minutes later, Marselino Ferdinan earned a free-kick and took the shot but it sailed over the crossbar.

On the half-hour mark, Kasidit Kalisin sent Pornsawan Sankla dashing into the box but his weak shot was easily caught by I Made. Later, Kasidit had the fans on their feet but his header from a corner kick was just off the mark.

The action intensified after the break and the Thai fans finally had something to cheer when Niphitphon was on the mark in the 52nd minute.

Thailand put the game beyond Indonesia in the 70th minute when Niphitphon took advantage of a defensive error to tap the ball over the goalkeeper.
