Both teams needed the three points and this led to a tight affair with neither side able to breach the other's defence.
That, however, changed just before the half-time whistle was blown as Australia took the lead through skipper Joshua Rawlins a minute into added time.
It was to prove to be the only goal of the match as Australia held on for the three points.
Vietnam 6-0 Macau
Vietnam, helped by two own goals, defeated Macau 6-0 to not only score their third win but also register another cleansheet.
Having registered wins over Timor-Leste (2-0) and Mongolia (7-0), Vietnam started as favourites against a Macau side who had lost all three of their previous matches.
Vietnam, however, had to wait till the 28th minute for their opening goal and it came from the unfortunate Sou Hin Nang who sent the ball into his own net.
That would be the only goal to separate the sides going into the half-time break but the floodgates opened once forward Vu Dang Minh Tu doubled Vietnam's lead in the 48th minute.
A second Macau own goal, this time by midfielder Lei Cheng Lam, took Vietnam further ahead and forward Phan Duy Hao made it 4-0 just a minute later.
Duy Hao added his second in the 64th minute and midfielder Dam Duc Vinh capped yet another impressive Vietnam performance with his goal three minutes from fulltime.
