Qualifiers - Group K: Korea Republic, Thailand show their class

Yangon: Lee Kyu-dong scored a hat-trick to steer Korea Republic to an emphatic 10-0 win over Chinese Taipei, while Niphitphon Wongpanya's brace powered Thailand to a 4-0 win over Myanmar in Group K of the AFC U-16 Championship 2020 Qualifiers at the Thuwanna Stadium on Wednesday.

Chinese Taipei simply had no answer for the East Asians as Korea Republic led 3-0 at the break before turning on the power in the second half for an emphatic start to their qualifying campaign.

Thailand were too strong for Myanmar as the young War Elephants raced to a 3-0 lead by half-time before finishing the job.

Lee Kyu-dong got the ball rolling with two quick goals in the 19th and 20th minutes before Lee Dong-hyeon’s strike in added time gave Korea Republic a 3-0 lead going into the break.

Korea Republic picked up the pace in the second half with Lee Kyu-dong completing his hat-trick two minutes after the restart and they found their fifth goal through Kim Ji soo’s strike in the 54th minute.

Despite their best efforts to contain their opponents, Chinese Taipei fell further behind as Her Dong-min (70th), Chang Ha-min (81st) and Kim Do-hyun (88th) gave Korea Republic an 8-0 lead.

Chang Ha-min then added his second goal in stoppage time before Kim Jin-yeop scored Korea Republic’s 10th seconds later.

The young Taeguk Warriors will face Myanmar on Friday, while Chinese Taipei meet Thailand.

Qualifiers - Group K: Thailand vs Myanmar

Thailand started the game well and took an early lead through Niphitphon Wongpanya's strike in the seventh minute.

Wongpanya then doubled their advantage five minutes later before Kakana Khamyok gave the Thais a 3-0 lead just before the half hour mark.

Myanmar could not find the goals in the second half and conceded again in the 63rd minute when Theekawin Chansri found the back of the net.

The young War Elephants will be looking to extend their winning run when they face Chinese Taipei on Friday, while Myanmar take on Korea Republic.
