Australia edge Malaysia for title, Indonesia finish third

Thong Nhat: Lachlan Brook's 79th minute goal secured Australia the 2019 AFF U-18 Championship title as they edged Malaysia 1-0 in a hard-fought final on Monday.

In a match where both sides had their fair share of opportunities, Brook timed his run perfectly to steal in behind the Malaysian defence to slot home the winning goal.

Malaysia had high hopes of retaining the title they won last year, especially after having defeated Australia 3-0 in their group stage encounter earlier in the tournament.

For Australia, the triumph sealed their fifth title in nine appearances in the regional tournament.

Earlier, a hat-trick from Mochammad Supriadi led Indonesia to a 5-0 win over Myanmar for third spot.

Supriadi was on target in the 38th, 42nd and 45th minutes with Beckham Putra Nugraha scoring in the 37th and 44th minutes.

“The players showed their commitment today where even though we were not playing for the title, they still played hard to finish the competition in third,” said Indonesia head coach Fakhri Hussaini.

The battle was keen at the start but one mistake from Myanmar opened the floodgates as Indonesia plundered five goals in less than 10 minutes.

The teams will now turn their attention to the 2020 AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers which will be played in November.
