Australia, Malaysia seal semi-final spots

Binh Duong: Australia and Malaysia advanced to the AFF U-18 Championship 2019 semi-finals in contrasting styles in Binh Duong, Vietnam on Thursday.

Australia defeated Singapore 5-0 to finish as Group B winners while Malaysia - who lost 1-0 to Thailand - emerged second after Cambodia stunned Vietnam 2-1.

Australia will meet Myanmar while Malaysia will play Group A winners Indonesia in Saturday's semi-finals.

Australia dominated from the start against an already eliminated Singapore and took the lead through Fabian Andres Monge in the 23rd minute with Dylan Ruiz-Diaz adding further goals in the 35th and 39th minutes for a comfortable lead going into the break.

Thomas Lachlan Fay added the fourth in the 73rd minute and Ruiz-Diaz notched his hat-trick five minutes later.

Australia won't it have that easy against Myanmar, who finished second behind Indonesia only on goal difference, having won four and drawn once in the group stage.


Thailand played their best match of the tournament to edge Malaysia 1-0.

With the Malaysians playing it defensive, the Thais created a hatful of chances only for their strikers to muff them all, with the winner finally coming in the 69th minute through substitute striker Sitthinan Rungrueang.

The defeat, however, wouldn't prove costly for Malaysia thanks to Cambodia's win over Vietnam.

The Malaysians, however, will need to up their game against an impressive Indonesia in the semi-finals.


Vietnam went into the tie aware that their fate wasn't in their hands but failed to capitalise on Malaysia's defeat to Thailand as the hosts lost 2-1 to Cambodia.

A win would have taken Vietnam to 10 points, one ahead of Malaysia in the final standings but Cambodia were no pushovers and took the lead in the 55th minute through captain Sieng Chanthea.

Vietnam equalised right at the end but Cambodia had the final say with Thy Lieng scoring the winning goal deep into added time.
