Jordan set the early pace in WAFF U-18 Championship

Al Ram: Jordan got off to a winning start with a 2-0 win over hosts Palestine, while UAE and Bahrain went goalless as the WAFF U-18 Championship got underway at Faisal Al Husseini Stadium on Thursday.

The inaugural six-team tournament, which acts as a preparatory step for November’s AFC U-19 Championship 2020 Qualifiers, will decide the regional youth champions in the final next Friday.

WAFF U-18 Championship to kick off in Palestine

Al Ram: Some of West Asia’s most promising youngsters will continue their preparations for this year’s 2020 AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers when the 2019 WAFF U-18 Championship begins in Palestine on Thursday.

Being staged for the first time, the competition features six teams from the region, all of whom will participate in the Continental qualifiers in November.

All 11 matches in the competition will be held at Al Ram’s Faisal Al Husseini International Stadium.

Thong Nhat: Lachlan Brook's 79th minute goal secured Australia the 2019 AFF U-18 Championship title as they edged Malaysia 1-0 in a hard-fought final on Monday.

In a match where both sides had their fair share of opportunities, Brook timed his run perfectly to steal in behind the Malaysian defence to slot home the winning goal.

Malaysia had high hopes of retaining the title they won last year, especially after having defeated Australia 3-0 in their group stage encounter earlier in the tournament.

For Australia, the triumph sealed their fifth title in nine appearances in the regional tournament.

Late strike seals title for IR Iran

Dushanbe: A late goal from Mahdi Hashemnezhad Rahimabadi gave Islamic Republic of Iran the point they needed to win the 2019 CAFA U-19 Championship title after they earned a 1-1 draw against 10-man Tajikistan at Dushanbe Central Stadium on Thursday.

Needing only to avoid defeat to hold off the hosts in the final match of the round-robin competition, Iran fell behind to a first-half goal from promising Tajikistan striker Rustam Soirov but hit back with Rahimabadi’s 80th-minute leveller to become the Central Asian champions.

Earlier in the day, Uzbekistan beat Turkmenistan 2-0 to finish third in the competition, which serves as preparation for the forthcoming 2020 AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers.
