Mazloumi appointed IR Iran U-19 boss

Tehran: Former Esteghlal head coach Parviz Mazloumi will lead Islamic Republic of Iran at October’s AFC U-19 Championship in Uzbekistan, after being appointed as the team’s head coach.

Team Melli Javanan will face host nation Uzbekistan, as well as Indonesia and Cambodia in Group A of the continental tournament.

Mazloumi – who returns following a four-year absence from top-level coaching - replaces former head coach Sirous Pourmousavi, who stepped down from the role in June.

An Esteghlal stalwart for over a decade as a player, Mazloumi also coached the club over two separate spells, leading the side in AFC Champions League campaigns in 2011 and 2012.

He also led IR Iran’s B team to the 2007 WAFF Championship, and won the second-tier Azadegan League as coach of Saba Battery in 2003-04.

Four-time champions, but without a continental title at this level since 1976, Iran qualified for the 2020 AFC U-19 Championship with wins over Kyrgyz Republic, Nepal and United Arab Emirates.

Mazloumi will lead the side in a blockbuster opening day clash against Uzbekistan in Tashkent on October 14, with the final to be held on October 31.
