Qualifiers - Group J: Superb starts for Japan, Vietnam

Ho Chi Minh: Japan and Vietnam kicked off their AFC U-19 Championship Uzbekistan 2020 Group J Qualifiers in style after beating Guam and Mongolia respectively on Wednesday. 

Japan showcased their early intentions with a 10-0 win over Guam, while Vietnam surged in the second half to beat Mongolia 3-0 in the day's later match.

Takeda Hidetoshi gave the 2016 champions a good start when he opened the scoring in the ninth minute, before doubling his tally 11 minutes later.

Sakuragawa Soromon struck three minutes before half-time to give Japan a 3-0 lead heading into the break.

Less than a minute into the second half, Ayukawa Shun etched his name on the scoresheet, before Kato Hijiri found the back of the net in the 59th minute.

Shun scored his second five minutes later and then turned provider for Soromon and substitute Haruyama Misaki's goals in the 64th and 64th minutes respectively.

Hidetoshi completed his hat-trick in the 83rd minute, before Soromon bagged his third goal of the night just moments later to end proceedings.

Japan will face Mongolia on Matchday Two, while Guam take on Vietnam.

Vietnam 3-0 Mongolia

It was a tight contest from the and both teams couldn't find the breakthrough they needed as they entered the half-time break goalless.

The deadlock continued way into the second half, with Nguyen Thanh Khoi finally putting Vietnam ahead with a crackling strike from outside the box in the 64th minute.

Ten minutes later, Nguyen Kim Nhat's slick back-heel effort rebounded off Mongolian midfielder Buyant Munkhbat to make it 2-0 for Vietnam.

The hosts were moving with speed and confidence, and the Mongolian defence succumbed to the pressure again two minutes later when Gan-Erdene Batmunkh brought down Kim Nhat in the box, which Nguyen Van Tung then duly converted to seal the hard-fought victory.

Tajikistan have already qualified as Group C winners while Group G kicked off on Saturday. Group A of the Qualifiers - featuring Iraq, Oman, Palestine, Kuwait and Pakistan - has been postponed with new dates to be announced in due course.

The 11 group winners and four best runners-up will join hosts Uzbekistan in the 2020 Finals.

Should Uzbekistan finish either top of Group F of the Qualifiers or are among the best four second-placed teams, the fifth best runners-up will qualify.
