WAFF U-18 Championship to kick off in Palestine

Al Ram: Some of West Asia’s most promising youngsters will continue their preparations for this year’s 2020 AFC U-19 Championship Qualifiers when the 2019 WAFF U-18 Championship begins in Palestine on Thursday.


Being staged for the first time, the competition features six teams from the region, all of whom will participate in the Continental qualifiers in November.

All 11 matches in the competition will be held at Al Ram’s Faisal Al Husseini International Stadium.

While the venue has hosted the senior national team before, it will be Palestine’s next generation who will be the focus when they meet Jordan on the opening day, with Group A rounded out by Qatar, who will begin their campaign on Saturday.

The United Arab Emirates and Bahrain meet in the opening match in Group B, which also features Iraq.

The top two teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals next Wednesday, with the region’s youth champions to be decided in the final held two days later.

The WAFF U-18 Championship follows similar regional championships held in Central Asia and the ASEAN region, won by Islamic Republic of Iran and Australia respectively.

Qualifiers for AFC U-19 Championship 2020 begin on November, with the tournament proper to be held in October 2020.

Thursday’s fixtures (all times local): UAE v Bahrain (16:00), Jordan v Palestine (19:00).
