Kim Kyong-yong - DPR Korea U19 vs Korea Republic

Chonburi: Kim Kyong-yong believes DPR Korea’s nerves of steel will help them beat defending champions Japan when the sides clash in the AFC U-19 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019 final on Saturday.

Kim scored twice as DPR Korea defeated Korea Republic 3-1 on Wednesday to claim their place in the eagerly anticipated title showdown, while Japan showed their pedigree with a comprehensive 7-0 win over Australia in the other semi-final.

Both teams have a long-standing history in the competition, with five-time champions Japan winning the tournament’s 2011, 2015 and 2017 finals against the Koreans.

Nevertheless, Kim feels that the collective mentality on display during the win over Korea Republic will, once again, play a key role as her side looks to secure a second Continental crown after a 12-year hiatus.

"All of us played with a collective mentality throughout that match [against Korea Republic],” said the striker, who is currently the tournament’s joint-leading goalscorer alongside Japan ace Yuzuki Yamamoto.

Semi-final: DPR Korea vs Korea Republic

“I scored the first goal and to score the second was easy with the kind of confidence we have. All the players performed very well,”

“I’m very confident in my abilities as a player. I have four goals now and I feel I can deliver more when we face Japan.

"The players are pumped up [to face Japan], and we will perform to the best of our abilities in the final. Our team mentality will see us through.”

With their 2020 FIFA U-20 World Cup ticket already secured, DPR Korea – the competition’s most successful Asian team – have wasted little time in setting their sights on winning the global get-together for what would be a record-equalling third time.

"Looking ahead to the 2020 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Nigeria, you only need to look back at our record in the tournament.

“Playing at the World Cup will be a good experience for us. Our desire to win at the world’s biggest stage is very strong and we are confident we can be champions again next year.”
