Group A: Japan beat Switzerland to finish top

Asuncion: Japan survived a late Switzerland revival to win 5-3 and finish as FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Paraguay 2019 Group A winners on Tuesday.

Japan were confident from the start, having secured a top two finish in Group A, after beating Paraguay and USA in their earlier matches.

Takuya Akaguma opened the scoring in the second minute with a superb right-footed effort, finding the net again six minutes later when the Swiss defence failed to safely clear the ball.

Switzerland pulled one back in the 10th minute through Noel Ott's free-kick that bounced awkwardly off the sand and over goalkeeper Shingo Terukina.

The second period saw back-and-forth action, but it was Japan who found the back of the net in quick succession in the 21st minute through Takaaki Oba and captain Ozu Moreira's efforts to make it 4-1.

Masayuki Komaki scored in the 24th minute but Switzerland began picking up the pace and pushing the East Asians back and eventually reduced their deficit when Dejan Stankovic converted a penalty in the 33rd minute.

Stankovic scored his second goal of the evening two minutes later but the gap was too much to cover as Japan held on to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

Japan will face Uruguay in the knockout stage on Thursday.
