Nassau: The United Arab Emirates endured extra-time heartache on Tuesday (local time) as a narrow 2-1 defeat to Portugal ended any hope the West Asian side had of advancing to the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup quarter-finals.

Bruno Novo’s late winner proved the difference in a tight affair at the National Beach Soccer Arena in Nassau, as the Emiratis finished their campaign occupying third spot in Group C behind table-topping Paraguay and Portugal who both progress to the next phase.

Reigning champions Portugal had taken a 19th minute lead through Belchior, before Ali Karim levelled matters in the dying embers of normal time.

However, it was not to be for the UAE, with Novo duly finding the net early in extra-time to seal a dramatic win for the Europeans and send the Emiratis home.
