Q-final: Japan beat Uruguay to seal last four spot

Asuncion: Japan are through to the semi-finals of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup Paraguay 2019 after notching a 3-2 win over Uruguay in their last eight tie on Thursday.

Japan will face Portugal, who defeated Senegal 4-2 in their last eight match, in the semi-finals on Saturday.

The other semi-final will see Russia, who came from behind to shock defending champions Brazil 4-3, playing Italy. The Italians defeated Switzerland 5-4 in their last eight tie.

Japan took the lead in the eighth minute through Takaaki Oba, who finished well into the bottom corner after effective hold-up play from Shusei Yamauchi before Masanori Okuyama doubled their lead in the 11th minute.

Teruki Tabata added to Japan’s advantage when he finished off a well-worked team move, headiing in from close range in the 16th minute.

Uruguay captain Gaston Laduche brought his team back to within two goals by converting a penalty in the 20th minute and Marcelo Capurro scored late on, but Japan held on to advance to their first semi-final in 14 years.
