Al Romaihi strikes twice as Bahrain edge UAE

Dubai: A second half brace from Mohammed Al Romaihi helped Bahrain secure a come-from-behind 3-1 win against UAE in an international friendly at Zabeel Stadium on Monday.

It was the third consecutive win for Bahrain during their Dubai training camp, having defeated Tajikistan and Lebanon 1-0 and 3-1 respectively.

UAE, meanwhile, failed to build on their 3-2 win over Tajikistan last Thursday.

UAE finished the first half 1-0 ahead with Caio Canedo opening the scoring for the home side in the 33rd minute, finishing with a powerful screamer after receiving a neat pass from Ali Mabkhout.

Bahrain had to wait until the 73rd minute to draw level through a penalty after Ali Madan was fouled by Sebastian Tagliabue. Mohamed Marhoon made no mistake from the penalty spot he slotted the ball past UAE goalkeeper Khaled Eisa.

UAE were denied a chance to regain the lead five minutes later as a header from Tagliabue was blocked by Bahrain goalkeeper Sayed Mohammed Jaffar. The ball bounced invitingly for Fabio Lima but Ahmed Bugammar stepped up to make a goal line clearance.

Bahrain then stunned the home side in the 81st minute as Bugammar headed the ball off a corner inside the area which was initially blocked by Khaled Eisa but Al Romaihi was quick to pounce on the rebound to score from close range.

Al Romaihi scored his second five minutes later as he finished off Marhoon’s pass.

The two sides are preparing for the resumption of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023.

UAE are currently fourth in Group G of the Asian Qualifiers with two victories from four matches while Bahrain are second in Group C with nine points from five games.
