Malaysia’s Tan turns to Aidil Zafuan for experience

Head coach Tan Cheng Hoe has turned to Aidil Zafuan Abd Radzak to strengthen the Malaysian defence as they prepare to face Vietnam in the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 on October 10.

Malaysia conceded four goals in their first two matches - a 3-2 victory over Indonesia while Ali Mabkhout’s double saw the Southeast Asians edged 2-1 by the United Arab Emirates in their second match.

“Aidil is experienced but we have not decided whether or not he will be in the first 11. This will spark a healthy competition among the players as everyone needs to be focused in every position,” said Tan to local media.

“So far, Aidil has been playing well with (Malaysian champions) Johor Darul Ta’zim, and last year he played well in the AFF Cup."

“With his experience, he should be able to guide the team. When I watched him against Terengganu (in the Malaysia Cup last Saturday), he looked fit.”

Aidil Zafuan has made 82 appearances for the senior national team, scoring three goals.

The veteran defender has won six Malaysia Super League titles as well as the 2015 AFC Cup and 2017 Malaysia Cup with Johor Darul Ta’zim and will bring added experience to Tan’s squad.

Malaysia are scheduled to play a warm-up against Sri Lanka at the National Stadium in Bukit Jalil on October 5 before facing Vietnam at My Dinh National Stadium in Hanoi.
