Singapore City: Singapore clinched all three points with a 2-1 win over Palestine in Group A of the Asian Qualifiers for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and AFC Asian Cup China 2023 at the Jalan Besar Stadium on Tuesday.

Singapore had opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw with Yemen while Palestine had defeated Uzbekistan 2-0 and went into the tie against the Southeast Asians as slight favourites.

Singapore, however, started brightly and their early aggression was rewarded as Shakir Hamzah capitalised on some poor Palestinian defending to give his side the lead in the fourth minute.

A powerful Safuwan Baharuddin header six minutes later nearly widened Singapore's lead but the Palestinain custodian was up to the challenge.

Palestine, who had played great football to upset Uzbekistan, weathered the Singapore attacks and looked to hit on the break and were rewarded in the 14th minute as Yaser Hamed found the back of the net from close range in the 14th minute.

The home team, however, kept their heads up and and Shahdan Sulaiman’s inch perfect corner kick in the 39th minute was nodded home by Safuwan for Singapore to take the half-time lead.

Palestine started the better of the two in the second half but found the Singapore defence hard to breach.

The few half chances the West Asians created were wasted and Singapore clinched a morale-boosting win.
