Qatar fall to Ghana’s second half blitz in Antalya

Antalya: Reigning AFC Asian Cup champions Qatar suffered a 5-1 defeat to Ghana in an international friendly at the Mardan Sports Complex in Turkey on Monday.

Qatar, who were playing their first international match in 11 months, held their own in the first half which finished 1-1 but found Ghana hard to contain in the second period.

Qatar had the opening chance of the match after only four minutes but the woodwork blocked a powerful shot from Almoez Ali.

Ghana opened the scoring against the run of play after 22 minutes when midfielder Tariqe Fosu guided a cross from the left into an empty net from close range.

Qatar leveled the tie a minute before half-time as Ali timed his run to perfection to finish Boualem Khoukhi’s cross from deep in his own half.

The turning point in the match came in the 51st minute when goalkeeper Saad Al Sheeb suffered a head injury and had to be replaced by Mohammed Al Bakri with Qatar head coach Felix Sanchez making several other changes as well.

Ghana scored their second three minutes after the hour mark through Andre Ayew, who scored from inside the area and Samuel Owusu added the third two minutes later after beating the offside trap.

Ayew scored his second of the night in the 83rd minute, heading home a cross from his brother Jordan and substitute striker Caleb Ekuban sealed the big win with another header four minutes later.
