Tokyo Olympics: China PR’s Jia vows improvements after Brazil defeat

Miyagi: Head coach Jia Xiuquan, in accepting responsibility for China PR’s 5-0 defeat to Brazil in Group F of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics Women's football tournament on Wednesday, has promised his side will show improvement in their next match.

China PR, fielding a largely inexperienced lineup, fell behind by two goals going into the break and were unable to stop Brazil from scoring three more in the second half at the Miyagi Stadium.

Despite the defeat, China PR showed glimpses of their potential against the two-time Olympic silver medallists and Jia applauded his players' efforts and determination to make an impact in the match.

“Our players tried their best to play today against Brazil,” said Jia. “The responsibility for the team's defeat lies with me.”

After going 2-0 down, China PR began to assert themselves in the closing stages of the first half and the opening minutes after the break with Wang Shuang and Wang Shanshan coming close for the Steel Roses.

However, Jia’s young stars were overwhelmed shortly after, conceding three more goals through defensive errors with the 57-year-old admitting that improvements are needed.

“We will analyse the match video, summarise our mistakes and try our best to perform in the remaining games. I would like to see the players improve match by match. My apologies to the Chinese fans.

“Football includes the element of luck. As the head coach, I don’t want to put our performance down to lack of luck. The winner is always the team which is stronger and more confident. It's still our own problem.”

China PR will be aiming to bounce back when they face Zambia on Saturday, with the African side having opened their campaign with a 10-3 defeat to Netherlands on Wednesday.
