Yokohama: China PR's Tokyo Olympics Women's Football campaign came to an end with the Steel Roses falling to a 8-2 defeat to the Netherlands in their final Group F tie on Tuesday.

The defeat meant China PR failed to make the quarter-finals, with their campaign ending with just one point while the Netherlands advanced to the quarter-finals in style, topping the group on seven points ahead of Brazil on goal difference.

China PR, chasing their first win of the competition, started the match brightly with Wang Shanshan pulling her long-range effort just wide in the third minute.

The Netherlands, the 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup runners-up, were calm under the early pressure and opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a surging Jackie Groenen sending a pinpoint cross to Shanice van de Sanden, who scored with a clinical finish.

China PR tried to claw their way back into the game and should have done better in the 26th minute when Zhang Xin and Xiao Yuyi both failed to find the target from above the box.

However, Jia Xiuquan’s charges finally broke the Netherlands' resistance two minutes later after Wang Shuang charged her way into the box before threading an inch perfect pass to Wang Shanshan to slot home the equaliser.

Netherlands, however, kept the pressure on the China PR defence and restored their advantage in the 37th minute through Lineth Beerensteyn’s sublime finish off Dominique Janssen’s pass.

The European side scored their third goal through Beerensteyn’s close range effort following Shanice van de Sanden’s cross to lead 3-1 going into the break.

Netherlands continued to dominate in the second half and scored their fourth goal two minutes into restart through Lieke Martens, who rose highest to nod home Kika van Es cross before turning provider in the 65th minute for Vivianne Miedema to score the fifth.

China PR reduced the deficit in the 69th minute with Wang Yanwen finishing off a wonderful team goal.

Netherlands responded with goals through Martens in the 70th minute with Victoria Pelova making it 7-2 a minute later.

The Dutch side kept chasing for more goals and scored their eighth of the evening in the 78th minute when Miedema scored with a beautiful strike from the centre of the box off a corner to seal the emphatic win.
