Sydney: China PR captain Wu Haiyan believes there is more to come from her side, after they claimed a superb 6-1 win over Thailand in their first AFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament match on Friday.

With the difficulties faced in the final days of their pre-tournament preparation now well-documented, Jia Xiuquan’s side blew two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup participants Thailand away, scoring four goals before the interval on the way to a dominant victory.

But, according to Wu, the six-goal performance could well be improved upon as the tournament progresses.

“We prepared well for the game,” she said. “Scoring at the beginning was part of our plan, and we did well as expected.

“We will fully prepare according to the arrangement of the coach and we can definitely play better.”

Qualifiers - Group B: China PR 6-1 Thailand

China were sharp in front of goal against the Thais, scoring wonderful efforts from a range of positions to show an attacking verve in stark contrast to their blunt performances in the final third at last year’s World Cup, where they reached the Round of 16

Wu said the France 2019 experience is in the past, with all players firmly focused on Tokyo 2020.

“This is the Olympic Qualifiers,” she said. “We know that we can only participate in the Olympics after qualifying. It is a dream that we want to accomplish.”

“We continuously summarised and made changes after the France World Cup. Now we are full of confidence and we hope to have a good performance in this tournament.

“The Olympic is important to everybody. The 2019 World Cup has passed. We hope to show ourselves at the Olympic Games, to let everyone witness our progress.”

While Li Ying and Tang Jiali both scored twice against Thailand, one of the day’s brightest stars was Wang Shanshan, who contributed a goal and two assists in a dramatic return to top form on the international stage.

“We really needed a victory, especially after encountering many challenges and difficulties. The coach told us to seize the opportunity at the start and try to score," said Wang.

“We are glad that all the strikers achieved the task. Now it’s the time to work hard for the next game.
