AFC President congratulates Asian teams as AFC Asian Cup 2023™ cast finalised
Kuala Lumpur: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has congratulated the 11 Asian sides who sealed their places at the Continent’s pinnacle national team stage following the conclusion of the AFC Asian Cup 2023™ Qualifiers Final Round on Tuesday.
The road to the 18th edition of Asia’s crown jewel commenced on June 6, 2019, in Mongolia and Tuesday’s thrilling action, which culminated in Kuwait, brought to a close a qualification journey spanning more than three years.
Kuala Lumpur: The cast for the AFC Asian Cup 2023™ Finals was confirmed following the conclusion of the Final Round of Qualifiers on Tuesday.
Eleven teams booked their tickets from the six qualifying groups that were played in Bishkek, Kolkata, Kuala Lumpur, Kuwait City, Namangan and Ulaanbaatar, with Tajikistan creating history by confirming their first appearance in the Continental showpiece.
The 11 qualifiers join the 13 teams who had already booked their places after the second round of the AFC Asian Qualifiers - Road to Qatar™ in June, 2021.
Qualifiers Final Round Group A: Indonesia 7-0 Nepal
Kuwait City: Indonesia became the final team to book their place in the AFC Asian Cup™ 2023 after an emphatic 7-0 triumph against Nepal in the last game of the Qualifiers at Jaber Al Ahmad Stadium on Tuesday.
Head coach Shin Tae-yong’s men finished second in the group behind Jordan, pipping the Philippines to the fifth best runners-up ticket to the Continental showpiece and qualifying to the tournament for the first time since co-hosting it in 2007.
Kuwait City: Jordan confirmed their place at the AFC Asian Cup 2023™ as Group A winners with a 3-0 victory over group hosts Kuwait on Tuesday, sending their opponents crashing to continue their absence for the second edition running.
The result means Jordan qualify for the AFC Asian Cup for the fourth time in a row while Kuwait, champions in 1980, miss out on two consecutive editions for the first time in their history, having previously only failed to qualify in 1992, 2007 and 2019.
Qualifiers Final Round Group C: Uzbekistan 2-0 Thailand
Namangan: Uzbekistan secured their place in the AFC Asian Cup 2023™ as Group C winners of the Qualifiers with a 2-0 win against Thailand on Tuesday.
Jaloliddin Masharipov opened the scoring for Uzbekistan with Azizbek Turgunbayev sealing the win, which meant Uzbekistan topped the group with a maximum nine points, while Thailand - with two victories - also advanced as one of the five best runners-up.
