Al Ain: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has offered his congratulations to AFC Champions League 2016 winners Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors following their 3-2 aggregate victory over Al Ain.
Saturday’s final was yet another historic milestone in the history of the AFC’s flagship club competition with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors bagging an impressive US$3million - the biggest prize money in the history of the competition.
AFC President Shaikh Salman said: “I wish to extend my heartiest congratulations to Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors for winning their second AFC Champions League title tonight after two breathtaking legs.”
“I must also commend runners-up Al Ain for showing great effort and determination throughout the competition.”
The AFC President also offered Jeonbuk his best wishes for the FIFA Club World Cup in Japan next month. “Our Asian teams have performed admirably on the world stage – finishing third and fourth last year -and I am confident that they will do the continent proud in the FIFA Club World Cup.”
The AFC President also took the opportunity to congratulate all participating teams in this season’s AFC Champions League, which once again captured the imagination of passionate fans from across the continent with four clubs making their debut in the knockout stage.

“I would like to acknowledge the contributions made by our Member Associations, their clubs, our broadcast partners and sponsors for ensuring the AFC Champions League’s position as one of the best club competitions in the world.”
Jeonbuk, who were appearing in their third continental final, gained the early advantage with a 2-1 win over Al Ain in Jeonju in the first leg.
In the second leg, Han Kyo-won extended Jeonbuk’s lead in the 30th minute with a close range effort from Lee Jae-sung’s corner. Al Ain’s Lee Myung-joo reduced the deficit four minutes but despite their best efforts the UAE side were unable.
