AFC President praises Japan for extending U-16 Women’s record

Kuala Lumpur: AFC President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has congratulated Japan for capturing a record fourth AFC U-16 Women’s Championship crown after they narrowly defeated DPR Korea 2-1 in Saturday’s final at the Chonburi Stadium in Thailand. 

The two finalists will also complete Asia’s line-up alongside host India at the 2020 FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup, which will take place from November 2 to 21 next year.

Japan edge DPR Korea for title

Chonburi: Japan emerged victorious at the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019, outlasting defending champions DPR Korea 2-1 in a gripping final at Chonburi Stadium on Saturday.

Two goals in four first-half minutes from Suzu Amano and Manaka Hayashi helped Japan overturn an early Hong Song-ok penalty and end DPR Korea’s four-match winning run in the tournament.

The win makes Japan the first nation to win the competition four times, as head coach Michihsia Kano’s charges followed on from previous successes at the U-17 level in 2005, and U-16 triumphs in 2011 and 2013.

While Japan claimed the title, both nations will represent Asia at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup India 2020.

Nishio awarded Most Valuable Player, Hamano Top Scorer

Chonburi: Japan's Hanon Nishio was named the AFC U-16 Women’s Championship Thailand 2019 Most Valuable Player after a phenomenal tournament.

Teammate Maika Hamano, meanwhile, won the Top Scorer award to cap a successful tournament for Japan, who lifted the trophy for the first time since 2013.

China PR fight back to finish third

Chonburi: China PR came from behind to defeat Australia 2-1 to finish third in the AFC U-16 Championship Thailand 2019 at the Chonburi Stadium on Saturday.

Second half goals from Shi Xiaomin and Zou Mengyao completed the China comeback after Australia had taken the lead with less than a minute played through Hana Lowry.
