Kuala Lumpur: Asian Football Confederation (AFC) President Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa has sent his condolences to the Bahraini football family and the Bahrain Football Association (BFA) on the passing of its former national player Ahmed Yusuf Salmeen.
Widely regarded as a true icon of the game, Salmeen was known for his remarkable talent and for being a true sportsman both on and off the pitch. He was a mainstay in the Bahrain national team and had the honour of being the first goal-scorer of the first Gulf Cup in 1970 when he led the Reds to a second-place finish on home soil.
The AFC President said: “On behalf of the AFC and the Asian football family, please accept my heartfelt condolences and sympathies on the passing of Ahmed Yusuf Salmeen.
“He was one of the pioneers of football in Bahrain and his contributions laid the foundations for the future generation of players to aspire towards and we will always cherish his incredible service to the game,” added Shaikh Salman.
Salmeen also featured for Bahrain powerhouses Muharraq Sports Club, leading them to several domestic league and cup triumphs before focussing his attention towards developing and nurturing the Kingdom’s youth players.
The thoughts and prayers of the AFC and the rest of the Asian football community are with the loved ones and friends of Salmeen, the BFA and the Bahrain football community during this time of mourning.
