Kigali: Shaikh Salman bin Ebrahim Al Khalifa, president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and candidate for the FIFA presidency, has received a unanimous endorsement by the Executive Committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) at its meeting in Kigali, Rwanda on Friday.
"I am humbled by the support of CAF's Executive Committee and tremendously encouraged by the unanimous decision to support my bid for the office of FIFA president", Shaikh Salman said after the CAF ExCo decision was announced.
"I am deeply honoured to have earned the trust of many of our African friends at this crucial stage of the campaigning effort," he added.
To date, Asia's football president has received a full endorsement by a unanimous AFC Executive Committee decision, a move that has now been followed by yet another large confederation that alone counts for more than a quarter of the 209-strong FIFA Membership.
"The two endorsements only mean that there is a strong groundswell in favour of my candidacy. What they don't mean, is that I can sit back and relax. This campaign will be decided on the day of the vote, February 26, 2016, not before. Naturally, I am confident that I now have a reasonably strong position to work from with such support", Shaikh Salman noted.
