Manila: Two-time AFC Women’s Player of the Year Aya Miyama was once again honoured with the accolade at this year’s AFC Annual Awards in the Philippines.
The award comes following a superb run at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup 2014 where Miyama led Nadeshiko Japan to a 1-0 victory over Australia in the final.
Not only did the midfielder celebrate Japan’s first win at the continental competition, but she was also awarded the tournament’s Most Valuable Player award for her efforts.
Skipper Miyama was instrumental in her team’s creative play throughout the tournament proving to be a consistent and reliable anchor for Nadeshiko Japan’s attack.
She proved crucial in Japan’s 2-1 victory over arch rivals China in the semi-final as her accurate delivery from set pieces resulted in both goals.
The 29-year old also guided Japan at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon where they walked away with a silver medal.
Miyama’s contenders for this year’s AFC Women’s Player of the Year award included Brisbane Roar and Matildas’ midfielder Katrina Lee Gorry and Nadeshiko Japan teammate Nahomi Kawasumi.
