Melbourne: A public event to mark the AFC Asian Cup Australia 2015’s one-year-to-go milestone will be held at Federation Square on Thursday featuring 40 young Australian footballers of Asian heritage.
Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou and captain Lucas Neill, who is also the AFC Asian Cup captain ambassador, will be among football dignitaries attending the event set to start at 9am (local time).
The children, representing their country of origin or the country they will support during the AFC Asian Cup, will join Postecoglou and Neill for the first ‘official’ Asian Cup 2015 team photo and in a goal kicking competition.
The AFC Asian Cup trophy will be on display in Melbourne that will host Australia 2015’s opening ceremony on 9 January 2015 and a further six games including a quarterfinal. The other hosts cities are Sydney, Brisbane, Canberra and Newcastle.
The 2015 Asian Cup is Asia’s largest sporting event and will be the biggest football event Australia has ever hosted.
The continental football extravaganza will showcase 32 matches in 23 days involving the top 16 national football teams from across Asia and some of the best players in the world.
