Sydney: Qualification for the Olympic Games in Tokyo next summer is “crucial” for the further development of Australia’s footballing talent says head coach Graham Arnold as the countdown continues towards the 2020 AFC U23 Championship in Thailand next month.
Arnold, who coaches the U23 side as well as the senior side, has been charged with leading his nation’s attempt to qualify for the Olympic football tournament in Japan as the Australians seek to secure a spot at the Finals for the first time since 2008.

Seoul: Korea Republic have announced a 22-man roster for the AFC U23 Championship Thailand 2020, leaving one spot open for the possibility of filling it with an European-based player.
In the running for the final spot are Lee Kang-in, who plays for Spanish club Valencia CF and midfielder Paik Seung-ho from German outfit SV Darmstadt 98.
Both Lee and Paik have played for the senior Korea Republic national team. Lee, 18, also starred for the U-20 national squad this year, leading Korea Republic to the final at the FIFA U-20 World Cup Poland 2019 and winning the Golden Ball as the tournament's best player.

Kuala Lumpur: Asian football will reach another historic milestone with the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system making its full tournament debut at the upcoming AFC U23 Championship Thailand 2020, which is scheduled to take place across three cities – Bangkok, Buriram and Songkhla – between January 8 to 26, 2020.
Having made its successful debut from the quarter-final stage of the AFC Asian Cup UAE 2019 in January, the AFC U23 Championship Thailand 2020 will be the first AFC competition to implement the VAR system in all 32 matches.

Nanjing: The second educational activity in the AFC U-13 Girls’ Football Tournament 2012, the Referee Course, began at the Jiangning Football Training Centre in Nanjing, China, on Monday, for officials to get ready for six days of matches starting this weekend.
The 12-day course will last until June 14 to prepare the young referees for the upcoming matches and challenges in their refereeing future.
Lin Weiguo, Chinese FA (CFA) Deputy Director of Referees, speaking at the opening of the Referee Course, said:
“Before starting the course, on behalf of Wei Di, Chairman of CFA, I would like to express our thanks to AFC and JSFA, which have provided for the participants very good conditions in the course and treated us quite nicely.
“The duration of the Referee Course is short, but I wish all the participants will have a meaningful and successful experience which can help them in their future career.”
Iranian AFC Elite Referee Instructor Masoud Enayat feels honoured to be given the opportunity to work in a girls’ tournament as an instructor again as he also instructed in the U-13 Girls’ Football Tournament in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from March 5, this year.
“I feel pleased to participate in this girls’ educational festival. And among the most important things in the course are match analysis and the Laws of the Game which I hope the participants will pay great attention to.
“In addition, what I hope for is more communication between us and any questions from you throughout the course. And good luck to you in the course.”
After the introduction, the young participants gave a brief self introduction which will enhance mutual understanding before the course started.
The referees will have an opportunity to put the new knowledge and skills to use when they officiate matches on June 9-14.
